Make Sure Your Head Hits the Right Pillow – How Pillows Can Help to Alleviate Back Pain

Pillow

Feather-Made

When you think of feather pillows, you imagine fluffy. But that’s not always the case.

Feather-Made Pillows

These pillows are soft and supportive, plus they bend to fit your head and neck shape.

A quality feather pillow should use small, perfectly curled feathers which provide the right amount of bounce and have the same strength as carbon fiber.

Down-Made

A down pillow is made with the birds’ undercoat, so it’s soft and cushiony.

Down-Made Pillow

These airy pillows feel luxurious and airy, but they’re not the best in terms of support. The most cushiony type is made with down from European geese, which have a high, 600+ fill-power.

Memory-Foam-Made

Memory foam pillows are an excellent choice for people who want additional support, pain relief, and an improved posture. Memory foam adjusts to your anatomical curves, so your head, neck, and upper body stay in a neutral, relaxed position.

Memory-Foam Made Pillow

This type of pillows changes shape throughout the night, depending on your movements. There is a wide array of memory foam pillows, and you can choose in terms of shape, size, and elasticity.

Microbead-Made

These pillows are made with EPS – unexpanded polystyrene – which looks like mini beads.

Microbead-Made Pillow

The most common example you can find these travel neck pillows. While these pillows offer firm support, they’re not cushiony at all.

Buckwheat-Made

If you need a green solution and firm support, look no further than buckwheat pillows.

Buckwheat-Made Pillow

These pillows are made with buckwheat seeds, so they’re eco-friendly and vegan, but they’re also not fluffy at all.

Water-Made

The advantage of water pillows is that they change shape easily throughout the night for optimum neck support. However, because they change shape with even your tiniest move, they can wake you up if you’re a light sleeper.

Otherwise, you can adjust their firmness level by adding more water, though they are heavier than other pillows.

Pillows for Sleep Apnea

If you need a CPAP machine to help you breathe during sleep, you know that it’s quite difficult to find cushions to fit all its tubes and cords.

Apnea Pillows

Sleep apnea pillows are designed specifically for this equipment, but there are different types on the market, in terms of height, feel, and materials.

The best sleep apnea pillows are filled with memory foam or polyester fiber.

Neck Pillows

If you need upper body and neck support during sleep, consider a neck pillow.

Neck Pillows

Its baffle aligns your head and neck, so your spine is well supported in a comfortable, correct position.

Body Pillows

Body pillows are long, often more than 50 inches, so you can curl them around your body or stretch them to fit your body shape.

Body Pillow

You can put hug them, place them between your knees or above your shoulders. Body pillows are comfortable, offer excellent lumbar support, and they’re recommended in pregnancy.

Lumbar Pillows

Lumbar pillows are designed to improve your lower back pain because they support your lumbar area.

Lumbar Pillow

That way, your spine, and lower back will relax in a neutral position, and your muscles will unwind.

Wedge Pillows

These triangular pillows are highly versatile because you can use them to support all your body parts.

Thanks to their high versatility, you can use them to read, to alleviate acid reflux symptoms, varicose veins pain, or to breastfeed.

Wedge Pillows

These pillows are a real comfort for pregnant women too.

Typically, wedge pillows are manufactured from polyester fiberfill, memory foam, or a combo of those too, which explains their high degree of support.

Best Position to Sleep for Lower Back Pain

If you have lower back pain, you might be scared into thinking you’ll never find a comfortable sleep position.

Positions for Sleep

Or, even worse, that you won’t be able to sleep in your favorite position anymore.

That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Here’s what you can do:

  • Add a knee pillow when you sleep on your side. Make sure your shoulder, side, and hip are well supported on the mattress. The knee pillow keeps your hips shoulder-width apart, which reduces lower-back pain. If you have large hips and your waist is off the mattress, add another small pillow beneath your waist. Make sure to change between your two sides frequently, to decrease the risk of muscle imbalance.
  • Try the fetal position. The fetal position is when you lay on your sides, with your knees tucked in and your torso slightly bent towards your knees. This position is good for people with herniated discs because curling your body inwards opens the space between the vertebras and decompresses your discs.
  • Add a stomach pillow when you sleep on your belly. While stomach sleeping is not usually recommended for backaches, it helps especially people with degenerative disc illness because it decompresses them. You can relieve back pressure by adding a stomach pillow. It’s also wise not to use a neck and head pillow that would otherwise curve your upper back too much, and misalign your spine and hips.
  • Add a knee pillow when sleeping on your back. This pillow helps keep your lower back curved, so your spine rests in a neutral position. If you need more lumbar support, place a small, firm pillow in your spine curvature. That helps with weight distribution throughout your back, to avoid stressing the same pressure points on your back and to keep your spine aligned.
  • Sleep in a reclined position. If you suffer from isthmic spondylolisthesis, it can be more comfortable to sleep on your back, reclined. This position helps create a supportive posture, taking the pressure off your spine and disentangling your vertebras.

Pro Tip 1: Regardless of your sleeping position, keep in mind that correct alignment is a rule of thumb. Your shoulders, hips, and spine should be aligned, so use pillows to make sure your hips and shoulders are in a straight line.

Pro Tip 2: If you notice any gaps between your body and the mattress, this means some of your body parts aren’t well supported, which creates painful pressure points. To avoid this, add firm or soft pillows to cover these gaps.

Pro Tip 3: When you turn around in bed, changing positions, you can mess with your body alignment. So train yourself to move your whole body at the same time, with your core tight. When you roll over, keep your knees tucked into your chest to make sure you change positions smoothly, while keeping your posture in proper alignment.

Pillow Size, Shapes, and Loft (Thickness)

Pillows are found in seven sizes:

  • Small: 20 x 12 inches; orthopedic or cervical pillows.
  • Standard: 20 x 26 inches; most common type of pillows.
  • Super standard: 20 x 28 inches.
  • Queen: 20 x 30 inches; good for combo sleepers.
  • King: 20 x 36 inches; good for combo sleepers and as a backrest.
  • Euro: 16-26 inches W; 16-26 inches L; square support pillow, not usually for sleeping.
  • Body Pillow: 48-54 x 20 inches; best for pregnancy and side-sleeping.

The shape is essential if you suffer from backaches. While there’s a wide array of possible shapes, there are two general categories:

  • Even: with a non-contoured surface, these pillows are best for back pain issues, especially if they’re made from a material that’s easy to mold, like shredded foam or feathers.
  • Curved: these orthopedic pillows have a contoured surface that raises the neck to alleviate neck pain.

Pillow loft (thickness) can be:

  • Low: under 3 inches; best for stomach sleepers because it doesn’t elevate the neck unnecessarily, curving your spine inwards.
  • Medium: 3-5 inches; best for back-sleepers.
  • High: over 5 inches; best for side sleepers because it avoids creating gaps between your body and the mattress.

Pillow loft also depends on your position:

  • The whole pillow is underneath your head: choose a medium-loft pillow.
  • The pillow is only partially under your head: choose a high-loft pillow for the gap.

Take your mattress type into account:

  • All-foam or latex mattresses allow more sinkage, so you need a low-loft pillow.
  • Innersprings and hybrids mattresses allow less sinkage, so you need a medium or high pillow for extra support and for covering the gaps.

Your bodyweight influences the pillow thickness:

  • If you’re above-average weight, you need a low or medium pillow.
  • If you’re below average, medium, or high pillows, don’t let your head sink, so you avoid gaps.

If your head size is:

  • Above average, choose a high pillow to avoid sinkage.
  • Average, choose a medium pillow.
  • Below average, choose a low pillow.

If your shoulder width is:

  • Wide, you need a high pillow to fill the space between your neck/ head and the mattress.
  • Medium, choose a medium-height pillow.
  • Narrow, you need a low-loft pillow that allows you to sink more in it.

Pro Tip: Consider an adjustable-height pillow if your needs and preferences vary.

Do Pillows Cause Back Pain?

Back pain is caused by strain and heavy lifting, skeletal problems, infections, pregnancy, sleep disorders, and poor posture.

Back Pain and Pillows

However, a bad mattress or bad pillow can cause the pain or make it worse because it doesn’t offer you the right support.

If your pillow doesn’t fit correctly in the nape of your neck, your body is thrown off alignment, which activates certain pressure points.

It’s wise to choose a pillow that supports your movements and neutral spine posture throughout the night:

  • If you’re a stomach sleeper, choose a high-density pillow or a contoured one that keeps your neck in a natural angle.
  • If your pillow isn’t supportive, your head bends and strains your upper body.
  • Don’t choose a very high pillow because it makes your neck muscles sore.
  • Choose a body pillow for side sleeping to keep your arm in a correct position and avoid shoulder pain.
  • If you’re a back sleeper, choose a medium-density pillow that doesn’t push your chin into your chest.
  • If you’re a side sleeper, choose a thin pillow that doesn’t force the neck back.
